Antique Clock Dresser

D0308

£5275.00

This exquisite Antique French Clock Dresser is a true testament to craftsmanship and artistry. Meticulously crafted from a combination of oak and burr elm panels, this dresser showcases the skillful use of secondary inlay and stringing made from fruitwood, boxwood, and ebony. The impeccable cabinet work and intricate hand carving exemplify the exceptional quality of this piece. Originating from the Bresse region of Mid-Western France, the dresser embodies the characteristic style and choice of materials from that area.

One notable feature is the charming naive drawing of a cockerel etched in the reserve on the clock door. This addition is believed to have been made after the revolution in 1789, symbolizing the National Emblem of France, the Gallic Rooster, which adorned French flags during that time. The significance of this symbol lies in its play on words, with "gallus" meaning both Gaul and rooster in Latin, making it a meaningful representation of the French people.

The clock mechanism has recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul, ensuring its optimal functioning. Our dedicated clock restorer confirms that all the works are original and from the period, including the fascinating 'Chain' pendulum. Not only does the clock keep accurate time, but it also strikes to provide a fully functional and immersive experience.
